Shape Memory Polymer Technology

EndoShape’s shape memory polymers (SMPs) belong to a category of products known as smart materials that have the ability to change size and shape in response to changes in temperature, or other triggers. Using a temperature-dependent process, these polymers can be deformed into any shape, and when stimulated, regain a previous “memory” shape to achieve their function. EndoShape’s proprietary materials and processes allow the company to tailor these materials for targeted applications.

Shape memory metals are currently very popular in medicine. EndoShape’s SMPs have advantages over shape memory metals for certain applications, including cost, higher recoverable strain levels, ease of manufacturing, better flexibility in navigating tortuous paths, and great versatility in fabricating extremely small, highly complex actuators.

Creating a shape memory polymer device: The initial device is manufactured, then subjected to heat and force to produce a stored shape. In medical applications, this stored shape is often very small to allow for insertion without open surgery. Once in place in the body and subjected to normal body temperature, the device recover it's original shape.
